As someone who has worn Elizabethan stays for hours, if your body is changing your uncorseted shape, then you’re wearing it wrong. It was laced too tight for her slender figure.
If it changed her shape and “squashed her insides”, it was the wrong shape of stays. Elizabethans used stays that created a smooth, triangular shape, not an hourglass.
